The No. 14 MCC Men's Soccer team opened up conference play against Arizona Western College, the No. 2 DI team in the country on Tuesday night and played to a 1-1 tie.

It took a collective team effort with timely plays by Farriel Corrales and Owen Clifford to earn a draw in the most intense and physical match of the season thus far. A total of eight yellow cards were distributed during the 90 minutes, six to Mesa and two to Arizona Western College.

The first half neither team could get a leg up on the other as the first 45 minutes ended with a 0-0 deadlock. In the 48th minute, AWC broke that deadlock off a Brandon Mbo Izako unassisted goal.

MCC tried countless attacks to tie the game up and all failed until the 87th minute when Farriel Corrales knocked one past the goalie off an assist by Nathan Breinholt

Arizona Western would have one final chance to take the game from MCC with a penalty kick with less than two minutes left. Luckily for MCC, keeper Owen Clifford was able to protect his goal and keep the Matadors from scoring.

With the tie MCC moves to 2-1-1 on the year (0-0-1 ACCAC). The team will be back in action on Saturday at home as they host another DI opponent, Eastern Arizona College.
