Men's Soccer losses lead late, ties with Mesa 1-1

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 2 ranked Arizona Western Matadors (4-0-2) settled for a 1-1 draw with Mesa (2-1-1) on Tuesday evening at John D. Riggs Stadium after Mesa tied the game in the final minutes.

After a scoreless first half, Brandon Mbo Izako opened the scoring on Tuesday evening, scoring a goal in the 49th minute to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

Arizona Western held the lead until the 88th minute when Mesa was able to tie the game off a header, leveling the game at one goal apiece.

The Matadors had an opportunity to grab the lead back a minute later with a penalty but were denied by the Thunderbirds keeper.

Esteban Gonzalez played all 90 minutes in goal for the Matadors, allowing just one goal in the tie.

The Lady Matadors are back home on Tuesday, September 12, hosting Glendale in an ACCAC matchup at Matador Soccer Field at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
