Mesa women fifth, Vakasioula tied for third, after first day of NJCAA women's golf championship

Sanford, Fla. – Mesa got solid play from all four of its scorers and sits in fifth place at the Division I NJCAA Women's Golf Championship at the end of the first day of play Monday.

The T-Birds recorded a 326 total over the difficult Mayfair C.C. course and are just four shots out of third place. Perennial champion Seminole State leads the field at 296, 11 strokes ahead of Daytona State.

As usual, MCC was paced by All-American Alyzzah Vakasioula who currently is in a tie for third place with a 75, just four shots off the leader, Seminole's Nagano Minori, the only player to break par at one-under 71.

Mesa grouped its scores nicely behind Vakasioula. The other three scorers are all between 27th and 37th place in the 90-player field.

Jolie Guyette is tied for 27th at 82, Viv Holguin is tied for 33rd with an 84 and Abby Schmidt is tied for 37th having carded an 85.

Play continues through Thursday at the 72-hole event.
