Schmidt helps lead women's golf to 30-shot first round lead at South Mountain Inv.
Apache Junction, AZ - With Abby Schmidt posting the second-best round of her career, a 75, the Mesa women's golf team shot to a 30-stroke lead after the first round of the South Mountain Invitational Saturday at the Apache Creek G.C.
Schmidt's round is second only to the 73 she fired last year at the Chandler-Gilbert Invitational. It put her just shot behind the leader, MCC's Alyzzah Vakasioula, who posted a 74.
As a team the T-Birds carded a 311 to lead second-place Pima (341) by 30 and host South Mountain (347) by 36.
For Mesa, Vivianna Holguin posted an 80 and Jolie Guyette an 82.
The tournament concludes Sunday.
