Women's Basketball Tops AWC, 66-56, in NJCAA Game of the Week

Yuma, Ariz. - The Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team topped the Arizona Western Matadors Wednesday night, 66-56, in the NJCAA Game of the Week.

The lady T-Birds got out to a fast start and never looked back, leading 19-10 after the first quarter. They remained up by nine at halftime and extended their lead to 14 after three quarters. Mesa's largest lead was 18 and they only trailed at the beginning of the game.

Both teams shot similar field goal percentages, with Mesa at 44.6% and AWC at 42.6%. Both teams also committed 18 turnovers but Mesa had the edge in points off turnovers, 17-15.

Freshman point guard Mackenzie Shivers lead the way for the lady T-Birds, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing three rebounds along with three assists. Sophomore forward Love Troupe had a game-high 11 rebounds and scored three points and stole the ball twice.

Kristol Ayson and Maddison Zugna both scored 13 points to lead the Matadors. Ayson also had six rebounds, four assists, and two steals on the night while Zguna had seven rebounds.

With the win, MCC remains undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 ACCAC record and an 8-1 overall record. AWC falls to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Mesa will travel to Glendale to face the Gauchos this Saturday at 4 PM before getting an extended break for the holidays.
