Lady Matadors can't shake off cold start in loss to Thunderbirds

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (9-2, 2-2) fell behind early and couldn't recover, falling to Mesa (7-1, 4-0) on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.

After grabbing an early lead, the Lady Matadors were held to 10 points in the first quarter, being outscored 19-10. Mesa matched their largest lead of the game thanks to a last-second three-pointer to take a 32-23 lead into the break.

Kristol Ayson finished in double-figures for the 12th time this season, scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds in the loss.

The Matadors used a big fourth quarter, scoring 21 points, to close the gap to eight on multiple occasions but would get no closer, dropping their second game of the season.

Maddison Zugna also finished the game with 13 points and was second on the team in rebounds with seven while Rosa Revueltas scored 11 points and led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Lady Matadors are back at home on Saturday, December 10 when they host South Mountain at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors (Over 65) and military. Arizona Western College students and employees gain free admission with their AWC ID.
