No. 20 men's soccer pulls off an incredible upset over No. 1 Pima Saturday night, 2-1.

The tension was palpable as the Aztecs visited John D. Riggs Stadium Saturday night, however the Thunderbirds were ready to tango with the No. 1 team in the country.

In a somewhat unusual game for the T-Birds, both of their goals came in the first half, only their ninth and tenth first half goals of the season. In the 18th minute Cole Wood was able to find the back of the net off a Abdiel Beltran assist. Just three minutes later Mark Gomez snuck a penalty kick past the Aztec keeper to give them a 2-0 lead, which they kept going into halftime.

The game remained a defensive battle until the 53rd minute when Pima was able to score their first goal of the game. From then on Mesa was able to remain locked down defensively. Though Pima did have multiple shots on goal in the second half, Mesa's keeper Alejandro Chavez made the stops when it mattered most.

With the historic win Meas improves their record to 8-2-1 overall with a 3-1-1 conference record. Mesa now sits 4th in the ACCAC standings just behind Pima. In their next two games Mesa will be facing two of the five top teams in the conference as they will travel to top seed Arizona Western and number five seeded Paradise Valley.
