Douglas, AZ - The Mesa women's basketball team; who are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Top 25 Poll, defeated Cochise College by a final of 67-57.
With the victory Saturday, the Thunderbirds take sole possession of first place in the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball standings, sporting an 11-6 overall record, to go along with a 6-4 mark in ACCAC action. With the loss, Cochise College drops to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in ACCAC play.
After trailing by a pair of points after one-quarter of play, MCC took control and never looked back at Cochise.
The team shot 42% from the field and outscored Cochise in the fourth quarter 21-12, on their way to the 10 point win.
In the win, Jayla Johnson finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
The Thunderbirds return home this Wednesday to host South Mountain Community College, with the opening tip scheduled for 5:30 pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.
