No. 21 Mesa Volleyball went 2-0 in conference play this past week as they picked up wins over Chandler-Gilbert and No. 25 Pima.
Chandler-Gilbert:
Mesa avenged a 3-2 loss to the Coyotes on their home floor Wednesday night as they would reverse the previous score and would take the 3-2 victory over CGCC.
The T-Birds, as they have in many matches, dropped the opening set to the Coyotes, 25-23. MCC would bounce back in the following two sets taking both (25-21, 25-20) to take a 2-1 set lead.
In the fourth set Mesa took their foot off the gas, falling behind and never able to regain their footing as they would drop the set, 25-17 to force their 6th deciding set of the season.
After Mesa fell behind 2-4 early in the final set, they outscored CGCC, 13-4 to take the victory.
Marley Avechuco finished the game with 20 kills (her second 20+ kill match of the season) Brianna Anderson had 39 digs, Brynlee Barris had seven block assists.
No. 25 Pima:
On Friday night Mesa earned their 6th set sweep of the season as they took down No. 25 Pima, 3-0.
The T-Birds came out with energy in the opening set and were able to grind out an opening set win, 25-22. The second set between the two ranked programs was just as competitive but MCC was able to pull out the 25-21 victory.
In the third set Mesa faltered a bit out of the gates, as they would trail 7-2 but would mount a comeback to tie the match at 14 each. From then on the Aztecs and T-Birds would battle back and forth eventually working to a 25-24 advantage for Pima who was unable to put the match away as Mesa responded by scoring three of the next four points to seal the victory.
Isa Folau led the way with 12 kills, Anderson totaled 27 digs, and Barris notched three block assists.
With the conference sweep No. 21 Mesa improved their record to 12-5 (8-4 ACCAC). There will be little rest for the T-Birds as they will host No. 9 Scottsdale on Monday.
