T-Bird Volleyball splits conference matches last week; look to gain momentum this week

Monday September 23, 2024 - 7:00 a.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

No. 19 Mesa Volleyball split their conference matches this past week as they dropped a match to No. 10 Scottsdale but bounced back against South Mountain.

No. 10 Scottsdale avenged their loss earlier in the season to No. 19 Mesa last Wed. Walking away with a 3-1 victory. In the 25-11 opening set defeat Mesa came out flat, a problem that has become more of a concerning trend than a couple of one off scenarios.

The T-Birds fell in the second set as well but put up more of a battle, losing 25-19. In the third set MCC seemed to gain their footing taking the 25-19 victory. SCC was finally able to put Mesa away in the fourth set as they won 25-17.

Marley Avechuco finished with 14 kills, Isa Folau ended with nine kills, and Izabel Wagner had eight. Brianna Anderson totaled 23 digs while Folau had 17.

The very next night the T-Birds bounced back against South Mountain with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Again Mesa lost the opening set 25-17 but would dominate sets two and three winning, 25-12 and 25-15 with a chance to put the Cougars away in set four.

SMCC would not back down and would power through in the fourth set to take the 25-22 victory and force a fifth and deciding set.

Mesa would dominate the fifth set, forging a six point lead early and would finish the match with a 15-9 lead.

Folau had another solid night totaling 18 kills and 22 digs. Marley Avechuco finished with 11 kills and 20 digs.

The T-Birds will have another busy week as they play two of three matches on the road starting on Monday as they travel to take on Park University (Gilbert) in a non-conference contest. On Wednesday Mesa will travel to take on No. 23 Glendale before finishing up the week on Friday at home against Phoenix College.
