Mesa Track & Field looks forward to their outdoor season

Wednesday March 13, 2024 - 12:05 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

MCC Track & Field get their 2024 outdoor season underway on Thursday as they host the Mesa Multis and compete in the PV Distance in the Dark.

Mesa broke nine school records and tied one in their 2024 indoor season. Deshay Turner had an especially impressive freshman showing in her first indoor season as a T-Bird as she broke four school records (three individual and one relay).

At indoor nationals the Lady T-Birds finished 11th as a team as they earned 12 All-American honors in the process. Maliyah Ross was the National Runner-Up in the Pentathlon as she broke a school record in the event.

With such an impressive indoor season for Turner and many other Lady T-Birds, sprints coach Lawrence Trice is expecting big things from his women sprinters.

"With Deshay [Turner] leading sprints for the women right now, I think it's going to be a great thing, you have her Diane [Ondobo] and Reanna [Campbell]  leading the charge for the women and I can't wait to see what they do for this upcoming weekend, it's going to be a special one," said coach Trice.

As for the men a great indoor season was capped off with a 15th place finish at indoor nationals and 11 All-American honors. Darius Brown has emerged as a leader for the men sprints team according to Trice. Brown enjoyed a productive indoor season breaking the school 200m record and earning All-American honors in the 4x400 relay.

"On the men's side you have Darius [Brown] leading the charge and with him doing what he's been doing I think it's going to be a special opener and we should see some real good things," said coach Trice.

In 2023 Mesa broke nine outdoor season records and look to set history again and shatter that record in their 2024 campaign.

Mesa has a busy weekend to kick off their outdoor season as they compete in the Mesa Multis which takes place at MCC Thursday-Friday beginning at 1pm. On Thursday night they will compete in the Distance in the Dark which is hosted by Paradise Valley CC but will take place at MCC. On Saturday the T-Birds will also be competing in the Spring Break Fiesta at the University of Arizona as well as the Cody McBride Invitational hosted by Paradise Valley CC.
