Women's Tennis drops two to Grace College

Saturday March 8, 2024 - 12:15 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

The Lady T-Birds fell in two matches to Grace College this week as they continue their 2024 campaign.

In their first match on Tuesday MCC fell 9-0 as Mikaela Correa and Jackelin Almada Lopez put up a fight in No. 1 doubles but fell 5-8.

In No. 1 singles action Mikaela Correa fell 3-6, 2-6 while in No. 2 competition Sienna Buttafuoco lost 2-6, 2-6.

Though Mesa was swept on Tuesday night head coach Feroz Rast knows that playing a strong four year program like Grace College will set his team up for success in conference action later in the season.

"Very happy with our progress so far in the season. I think playing a top 4 year program like Grace really helped us push our limits," said Rast, "I think you can really see that we are trending the right way and it has to do with our commitment and focus to the little things. We are gaining valuable experience and it will pay off when we face off against tough conference opponents."

On Wednesday night Mesa fared better against their competition picking up a win in doubles and singles action as they fell 7-2 as a team.

In No. 1 competition Mikaela Correa and Jackelin Almada Lopez came out with the 8-4 win. Lynn Angulo took the victory in No. 6 singles competition winning in three sets.

After all the action was done Rast was proud of the progress and resilience his team showed, playing back-to-back nights against a solid team can be draining both physically and mentally.

"We battled for every point and both nights we made things really tough for them. Big time results from freshman Lynn Angulo as she brought home the win on Wednesday in straight sets," said Rast, "also our doubles team really played well. Especially at number 1 doubles, Mikaela Correa and Jackelin Almada Lopez got the big win 8-4 on Wednesday but they were also really close to winning on Tuesday night."

The Lady T-Birds are now ranked No. 24 in the country in the ITA rankings after their showing so far this season. Mesa's conference battle with Paradise Valley was rained out and their match against Weatherford College next week was canceled, so MCC will be back in action on March 19 at home as they host Glendale in conference play.
