Women's tennis opens with win over New Mexico Military
Mesa, AZ – It was a busy weekend for the Mesa women's tennis team with three matches in three days, including two against upper-division NCAA four-year schools.
But when the T-Birds had a chance to compete on the two-year level they came away with a 6-3 victory over New Mexico Military Saturday, the middle match of the weekend. MCC also lost to NCAA Division I Northern Arizona, 8-1 and NCAA Division II Western New Mexico, 8-1.
In the NMMI match the T-Birds won four of the singles matches and two doubles. At No 3 singles Paige Stanford out-lasted her opponent, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2; Cindy Anders scored a solid 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 and Alazhay Rossi won at No. 5, with a 1-6, come-from-behind win. Also, Brooke Maclay won by default at No. 6.
In doubles, Anders and Stanford combined for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 and Rossi and Maclay won the No. 3 match by default.
In the Western New Mexico matcg, Ana Villavazo was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles.
The T-Birds will host Arizona Christian Monday at 1:30 on the MCC courts.
