Women's soccer kicks off their season against No. 1 Phoenix College tonight

The Mesa Community College Women's Soccer team kicks off their 2023 campaign tonight at home against the defending national champion, No. 1 Phoenix College.

The Lady T-Birds are coming off of a 4-11 (4-7 ACCAC) season in which they were shut out 10 times and only were able to generate 19 goals. They lost their leading goal scorer from a year ago in Rylee Rottweiler (8). For head coach Drew Guarneri and staff, finding ways to supplement that offensive loss will more than likely come from a collective effort than just one individual.

"It's going to come from a couple different people, Hailey Hough is going to be a key piece to it, Zashary Rosas hopefully we can put her up top a bit, and some other pieces it's going to have to be a collective effort," said Guarneri.

Through all the many practices, film sessions, and scrimmages, Guarneri is pleased with the efforts and attitude he gets from his squad. An important unappreciated character trait at this level is being able to not only get along with your teammates but also to work together with them to achieve a common goal.

"I like their attitude and effort, character is exactly what I wanted and they're proving to me that we can have success because they can get along and that's big for athletics at this level," said Guarneri.

In the team's first three games before conference play begins, they will be tested as they play two teams who made the Region I postseason just a year ago in Scottsdale and the No. 1 team in the country in Phoenix College.

For Mesa, the most important of the non-conference games is coming out prepared for their opponent.

"We're looking to see if we're going to be prepared for the games that count, when we're looking to make a playoff berth it's the games that count towards playoffs that are going to make a difference," said Guarneri.

The game will begin at 5:30 P.M. If you're not able to make the game in person but want to keep up with all the action, click here to watch the game live via T-Birds Sports Live.
