Women's soccer poised for good 2022 season which opens Tuesday
Coming off a season in which they reached the Region I, DII, championship game, the Mesa women's soccer team has high hopes for 2022.
Those hopes will get a quick test as MCC must host two teams ranked among the NJCAA pre-season top 20 in its first two games.
"I really like this team," says head coach Drew Guarneri, who is entering his 14th season in charge. "They are hard-working and have lots of character."
The T-Birds are coming off two years with nearly identical records, In 2021 Mesa was 9-7-2 and in 2019 the mark was 9-7-1. There was no 2020 season due to COVID-19.
MCC has eight returning players from a year ago, led by first team All-Region I/All-ACCAC forward Rylee Rottweiler. She scored 11 goals and had seven assists. That put her tied for seventh place in the conference in both goal-scoring and points.
Guarneri has three other forwards returning: Macy Tolman, Jacee Quinn and Shay Webster. Also back are two midfielders, Karis Pennington and Sarah Banks, as well as two defenders, Alexandra White and Katy Cafaro.
The T-Birds will play a total of 17 games, of which ten will be ACCAC contests.
