No. 9 Mesa Women's Basketball went 1-2 at the Thumbcoast Tip off Classic taking fourth place in Port Huron, MI.
Mesa vs. Mid Michigan:
The Lady T-Birds started off their trip on the right foot as they picked up their first ranked win of the season on Thursday night, defeating then No. 8 Mid Michigan, 64-56.
Mesa shot nearly 45% from the floor and used a 27 point second half to power themselves to victory. Ashiian Hunter led all scorers with 21 points as she hit 5-7 three-pointers. Brooklyn Scurry had a big game off the bench as she went a perfect 5-5 from the floor scoring 12 points. Brittany Kogbara was dominant on the glass grabbing 13 rebounds on the night.
Mesa vs. Harcum:
On Friday night with a trip to the championship game on the line the T-Birds took on then No. 22 Harcum College. In the 54-52 loss to the Bears it seemed that Mesa's shots just failed to find the bottom of the net.
Mesa shot 31% (22-71) from the field, 8.7% (2-23) from the three-point line, and 33.33% (6-18) from the free throw line.
With exception to shooting the ball it was Mesa's rebounding advantage (43-27), and ability to force 19 Harcum turnovers that helped keep the T-Birds hanging around till the final buzzer.
Britany Kogbara led the T-Birds in scoring as she posted another double double as she had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ashiian Hunter had 12 points.
Mesa vs. Lake Land:
In the third place game on Saturday Mesa took on Lake Land College who was ranked No. 6 at the time. Mesa's slow first half where they scored just 14 points and shot 7-30 (23.3%) from the floor saw them in a 12 point hole going into the second half. The T-Birds did not shoot a single free throw in the opening half.
In the third quarter Mesa responded well, outscoring the Lakers 19-11 while shooting 8-16 (50%) from the field. Going into the fourth quarter the T-Birds trailed by just four points.
In the fourth quarter though Mesa was able to get to the line 10 times (making 9) it would prove to not be enough to complete the comeback as they were outscored 18-20 by Lake Land. In the final period MCC shot 4-21 from the floor (19%). Mesa would fall, 57-51.
Kamiyah Hurd helped keep Mesa level as she had 12 points off the bench, Amaya Bekele scored 11, and Britany Kogbara scored 10 points to go along with nine boards.
Mesa will begin conference play at home on Wednesday night as they take on Chandler-Gilbert CC at 5:30 p.m.
