Wednesday January 3, 2024 - 9:00 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

No. 3 MCC Women's Basketball fell in their first game of the new year on Wednesday as they lost to Arizona Western College, 47-51.

Mesa had another off shooting night from behind the arc going 2-14 from deep. The Lady Matadors also dominated MCC on the glass, out rebounding them 42-27 in the contest.

MCC got off to a rocky start to the contest, scoring just one point until the 7:30 mark in the quarter when Mackenzie Shivers nailed a three-pointer. The Lady T-Birds would respond with a 7-1 run to swing the momentum in their favor as the quarter would end with a 16-15 AWC advantage.

The Lady T-Birds would not have a favorable second quarter, shooting just 4-14 from the field; they were outscored 8-13 in the frame. AWC dominated the glass as well in the period, grabbing 14 (five offensive) to MCC's five rebounds in the quarter. At the end of the first half Mesa trailed AWC, 29-23.

The third quarter went the way of Mesa from the jump, starting the quarter on a 8-2 run and ending the period on a 4-0 run they would cut the Lady Matadors' lead to just one entering the fourth quarter. MCC could've taken the lead in the quarter and capitalized on AWC's shooting woes (2-10 from the field in the period) but they were also not able to connect from the field at a high rate, shooting just 4-12.

The fourth quarter was shaping up to be a battle between the two teams as they would both go on 6-0 runs before AWC took the lead late and would finish off the Lady T-Birds 51-47.

Mesa was led in scoring by Jaida Brooks who tallied 15 points while grabbing five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and two steals.

With the loss MCC's record falls to 8-4 overall (3-3 ACCAC). They will be back in action on Saturday as they head off to visit the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes.
