Women's Basketball gets back on track with win against Gillette College

Tuesday December 19,  2023 - 2:38 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

No. 3 MCC Women's Basketball took down Gillette College 69-40 on Monday night to improve their record to 8-3 on the year.

The Lady T-Birds came out in the first half with a defensive mindset and held the Pronghorns to just 27% shooting from the field, holding GC to just eight points in the second quarter and 20 for the half.

MCC was able to hold GC to less than 10 points in the second and third quarter. In the second quarter the Pronghorns were held scoreless until the 6:27 mark of the quarter, and in the third period were held scoreless until there was just 3:55 left.

Offensively Mesa did a serviceable job, a little over 17 points a quarter while shooting 38.6% from the field. The Lady T-Birds did struggle a bit from downtown as they shot 7-29 from beyond

MCC won't be back in action again until after the holiday break when they will get back into conference play as they host Arizona Western College on Jan. 3.

Breakout Thunderbirds:

  • Brittany Kogbara was a monster on the glass for the Lady T-Birds grabbing 12 total rebounds (five offensive, seven defensive) six of which came in the second quarter.

  • Jaida Brooks led all scorers with 17 points while getting her teammates involved as she had seven assists and zero turnovers.
