No. 3 Women's Basketball opens up conference play on Tuesday night at home

Monday November 27, 2023 - 1:05 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

No. 3 MCC Women's Basketball will open up conference play on Tuesday night as they host the No. 12 DI team in the nation, Eastern Arizona College.

MCC has had an uphill battle to start their 2023-24 season as they've taken on four ranked teams, and three DI opponents. Though the Lady T-Birds had a tough schedule right out of the gate they looked unphased as they hold a 4-1 overall record, have three ranked wins, while knocking off the No. 5 DII team and the No. 3 DI team in the process.

With conference play beginning on Tuesday night for Mesa the real fun begins as these games have the most importance when it comes to standings.

Eastern Arizona College comes into play on Tuesday with a perfect 4-0 overall record, their most impressive victory coming on Nov. 2 as they took down Community Christian College,  118-18.

In their four games this season EAC averages the third most points per game with 74, while holding their opponents to a conference best just 38 points per contest. The Gila Monsters do a good job crashing the offensive glass as on average they grab 19 offensive rebounds per game.

Mesa has done a good job of spreading the wealth so far this season as in their five games this season they've had four different Thunderbirds lead them in scoring.  The Lady T-Birds do a great job of sharing the ball as they average 18.4 assists per game so far this season.

T-Birds Keys to the Game:

  •  Rebound, rebound, rebound - If there is one thing to watch for in this game it's going to be how well Mesa keeps EAC off the glass especially on the offensive end. EAC is one of the better rebounding teams in the conference so far this season while MCC ranks lower in the category.

  • Let it fly from deep - MCC ranks second in the conference when it comes to making three pointers per contest as they nail seven on average.

  • Contain EAC's big three - The Gila Monsters have three players averaging 10 or more points per game: Vitoria Santana (15), Sarah Deng (11.3), Ashlunn Chlarson (10.3). Santana will be a player to watch for EAC as she leads the team in points, rebounds/game (9.5), and assists/game (4.3).

The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. at Theo Heap Gymnasium. admission is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item.
