Women's Basketball knocks off No. 5 Morton College on Saturday

No. 16 MCC Women's Basketball bounced back from their loss to Utah State Eastern in a big way on Saturday as they defeated No. 5 Morton College, 77-71.

The Lady T-Birds came out in the first half and shot the ball well going 16/32 from the field and hitting six three pointers. Mesa outscored Morton College, 17-25 in the second quarter taking a 42-33 lead into the halftime locker room.

Morton came out in the third quarter and took momentum from MCC outsourcing the Thunderbirds 27-17 in the period and taking a 60-59 lead into the fourth and final quarter. 

In the fourth Mesa was able to lock down defensively holding Morton to just 11 points, their lowest point total in a quarter this season. MCC put up 18 in the final frame to capture their second win of the season, knocking off one of the powerhouse programs in the country.

MCC did a great job defensively on Morton's Sophia Remmel, holding her to just five points in the game. In Remmel's previous five games she had averaged 15.6 points.

Mesa dominated the offensive glass as they grabbed 41 total rebounds compared to Mortons 34 rebounds. MCC had 20 total offensive rebounds in the contest.

 

Breakout Thunderbirds:

Brittany Kogbara was a monster on the boards for Mesa as she totaled 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.

Ashiian Hunter continued to put up points for MCC as she had 15 points including three shots from long distance.

Jaida Brooks notched her first breakout game of the season as she led all scorers with 26 points on 9-21 shooting (3-8 from 3-PT range).

Mesa will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Community Christian College, tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
