Strong Momentum Helps Women's BBall To Third Straight Victory, Beat Phoenix College, 67-43

Mesa, AZ- Mesa women's basketball continued their strong play Wednesday night as they defeated the Phoenix Bears, 67-43.

For Mesa, its their third straight victory after initially starting the season with five straight loses.  This was also a big win for Mesa because it avenges the loss they suffered back in March in the ACCAC Championship Game when Phoenix beat the Thunderbirds to head to nationals.

1st Quarter

The only time Mesa fell behind in the game was early on in the first quarter but Mesa quickly erased any hope of another Bear victory in Theo Heap Gym as sophomore Taylor Reed stepped up and scored six points for the T-Birds.

Janessa Aukward and Briana Clah connected on two three pointers and Destinee Wright converted a layup with an and one to give Mesa a 17-10 first quarter lead.

2nd Quarter

With the great ending to the first quarter, Mesa continue to attack the basket, going on an 11-3 run in the first six and half minutes.

Clah again knocked down a three for the T-Birds while Reed knocked in four more points while Natalie Stilwell and Sham Troupe contributed a couple buckets for Mesa in an 18 point quarter that saw Mesa heading into the halftime locker room with a 20 point advantage, 35-15.

3rd Quarter

Mesa continued to put the petal to the metal as their bench came in and had productive minutes.

Troupe had six points in the quarter and Ashle Burns connected on a three right at the end of the shot clock to extend Mesa's lead to 51-29.

4th Quarter

With the game well in hand, Mesa never let up.  They pressured the Bear offense into turnovers and the T-Birds turned those turnovers into points.

Clah again connected on two more three pointers(4-5 3PT.) while Reed, Rudd, Troupe, Aukward and Fuller all added jumpshots of their own to finish off a great team effort and seal the win for the T-Birds.

On the night, Mesa outrebounded the Bears 30-29 and outscored PC in the paint 26-14.

Mesa shot 45.6 percent from the field and connected on seven three pointers(7-16).

Mesa is now 3-5 on the season, 2-1 in the ACCAC.  They will be on the road this Saturday at Glendale then back home next Wednesday against the South Mountain Cougars.  Continue to check the athletic website for further details and changes.
