Men's TF in Close Battle at Region I Championship

Mesa, AZ - The Thunderbirds men's track & field team competed on day one of the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday.

The 100m, 200m, and 110m hurdles each had preliminary rounds. The top nine finishers in the prelims automatically advance to the finals on Thursday.

The top eight finishers in each event score points, with the top three earning All-Region honors.

The 4x800m relay (Samuel Green, Yotuel Garcia, Hayden Gelder, and Ernest Green) were the region champions and broke the school record for the event with a time of 7:38.91. The previous record of 7:44.25 was set in 1991.

Y. Garcia was also an individual region champion in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:13.17, just six seconds off his own school record. Javier Garcia also earned region honors (third place - 32:01.71). Yael Caballero Ferro (fifth place - 33:01.54) and Wyatt Williams (sixth place - 33:53.10) each scored.

Bryant Palmer was the region champion in the pole vault with a mark of 4.52m. Emitt Post also earned region honors (third place - 3.92m) and Louis Ternyik (fourth place - 3.92m) scored.

L. Ternyik earned region honors in the javelin throw (second place - 48.27m). Emitt Post (fifth place - 45.86m) and Theodore Gosselin (eighth place - 43.19m) each scored.

Samuel Van Alstine ran a time of 9:52.08 in the 3000m steeplechase and finished in third place to earn region honors. Greyson Akers (fifth place - 10:16.99) and Masen Hofmann (seventh place - 10:26.77) also scored.

Alex Hernandez (fourth place - 45.91m) and Noah Miller (sixth place - 44.60m) scored in the hammer throw. Jeremiah Reed (fourth place - 6.88m), Jaylyn Martin (fifth place - 6.84m), and Efrain Velez (eighth place - 6.61m) scored in the long jump.

Tyson Tippett, Khamis Hassan, Dwayne Barrow, and J. Martin each advanced to the final for the 100m dash. T. Tippett, K. Hassan, and J. Martin also advanced to the 200m dash finals.

In the 110m hurdle prelims, Miles Fears and Devin Jackson each advanced to the final.

After eight events scored, the T-Birds are in a close battle with Pima as the Aztecs have 113 points to Mesa's 110 points. The remaining 14 events will take place on Thursday.
