Mesa Tennis picks up big conference wins against Glendale on Tuesday

Thursday March 21, 2024 - 12:15 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

Mesa Tennis picked up two conference wins on Tuesday against Glendale as the women battled for a 9-0 sweep and the men earned a 7-2 victory over the Gauchos.

Head coach Feroz Rast was pleased with both of his team's performances after their wins on Tuesday.

"This was a great team win for the men and women. We really came out with some urgency in doubles and set the tone for the day," said Rast.

Women:

The No. 24 Lady T-Birds continue their impressive play against ACCAC foes as they are 3-0 in conference play and 3-4 overall this season. Mikaela Correa continued her dominance as she won her No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0 and would be victorious in her No. 1 doubles contest with partner Jackelin Almada Lopez, 8-2.

The Mesa freshman has put her skills on display all season and has come up big for the T-Birds so far this year. Rast has been impressed with how Correa has yet to waiver in her outstanding performances which continued on Tuesday.

"Freshman Mikaela Correa continues her excellent season by winning her doubles and singles in a big way at the top of the lineup," said Rast.

Teammates Avounay Rossi and Sienna Buttafuoco were successful in their No. 2 doubles contest, 8-0. Kirsten Nielson and Lynn Angulo also got a victory in their doubles contest as they won, 8-1.

In singles play the Lady T-Birds swept the board and did so in dominating fashion as all matches were just two sets in favor of Mesa. See below for breakdown.

  2. Avounay Rossi / Sienna Buttafuoco won - 8-0

  3. Kirsten Nielson / Lynn Angulo won - 8-1

Men:

The T-Bird men were victorious over Glendale for the second time this season as Mesa is 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. In the T-Birds only traditional contest against the Gauchos in doubles competition Carson Abril and Nicolas Romero partnered up for the first time all season and the results were in favor of Mesa as the duo won, 8-1.

Rast was impressed with the pair's performance given their little time working together in doubles action.

"Freshmen Carson and Nicolas really came together well having played their first doubles match together," said Rast.

In singles play Mesa waivered a bit as both No. 1 Brady Miller and No. 2 Taylor Miyatani lost. John Vigil picked it up for his team as he won his No. 3 contest. See breakdown below.

Though MCC has picked up their play as of late, Rast knows the upcoming task at hand as they will take on Paradise Valley on Tue. March 26 for more conference action.
