Men's Soccer Battles Back in 2nd Half to Tie Chandler-Gilbert, 3-3

Mesa, AZ - In a match that looked more like a rugby contest at times, the Mesa Thunderbirds men's soccer team tied the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes, 3-3, Thursday afternoon at John D. Riggs Stadium.

Chandler-Gilbert scored the first three goals of the first half and things looked bleak for Mesa early on but Mesa continually pressured the Coyote back line but failed to put the ball in the back of the net.

Four different times Mesa had penalty shots just outside of their 18 yard box but couldn't convert for points.

In the 43rd minute, Austin Rios finally broke the scoring door open for the T-Birds on a header from a corner kick.

Still trailing 3-1 after half, Mesa again went on the offensive attack, with Benji Delgadillo scoring two goals to tie the match at three.

In 110 minutes of soccer, both teams combined for 39 fouls and 19 shots on goal.

This is the second tie between these two teams this year.  Mesa runs their record to 7-6-2.  They will have Saturday off then back at it again on Tuesday afternoon at home against the Glendale Gauchos, kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
