Ranked golf teams look for big seasons

Opening the season with both the men's and women's teams nationally ranked, the mesa golf programs get things started on their own home course Wednesday in the Mesa Invitational.

Coach John Guerrero's women's program is No. 6 in the Golfstat.com Division I rankings at the end of the fall season, while the men are No. 8 in Division II.

Leading the women's team, which has won the Region I championship 13 of the last 14 years, will be sophomore Alyzzah Vakasioula, a first team All-American last spring when she finished fifth at the NJCAA Division I National Championship. She posted a 73.71 scoring average as a freshman and then followed that with a 72.14 last fall.

Also back for MCC is Abby Schmidt the ACCAC Player of the Year last season. Newcomers Jolie Guyette and Viv Holguin figure to be important contributors.

On the men's side, the top three players, ranked by scoring average, all return. Warner Beach (73.93) and Tyler Trachsel (74.25) were both second team all-ACCAC a year ago, while Jake Trevino (74.81) also returns. All three posted even better marks last fall, with Beach dropping to a 70.40; Trachsel to a 72.50 and Trevino to 73.40.

Freshman Caden Rice produce an excellent fall season with a 70.60.
