Men's Golf Place 2nd at Regionals

GOLD CANYON, AZ – A pair of much stronger closing rounds allowed the Mesa men's golf team to take second place at the Region I, Division II, tournament played Thursday through Sunday at the Gold Canyon G.C. Sidewinder Course.  

After a tough 315 on day two which left the T-Birds 34 shots behind South Mountain, MCC bounced back with 292 and 299 totals over the final 36 holes, but still fell well short of SMCC's 1136.  

Chandler-Gilbert was third at 1243 and Glendale fourth with a 72-hole total of 1281.  

Play in round three Saturday had been suspended by lightning and resumed Sunday prior to round four.  

Individually, Alex Trevino (So., Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite H.S.) was Mesa's top finisher placing sixth with a 72-hole total of 296. T.J. Katherineberg (So., Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge H.S.) was one shot back in seventh place at 297. Jeff Kelly (Fr., Payson, AZ/Payson H.S.) was ninth at 300 and Jake Gerard (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) placed tenth at 307.

  Trevino and Katherineberg both received all-Region I honors.
