Men's golf slips behind by one at halfway point of Region I championship
GOLD CANYON, AZ - A battle between the region's top two teams was shaping up after the first two rounds of the Region I championship as South Mountain came from two shots down to take a one stroke lead over Mesa Friday. The tournament is being played at the Gold Canyon G.C. Sidewinder course.
The Cougars shot a 279 Friday for a 36-hole total of 566, a shot ahead of MCC's 285-282--567. Those two were well clear of Glendale at 628.
The T-Birds' Austin Fletcher (So., Memphis, AZ/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) followed his 70 of Thursday with a two-under-par 68 Friday to top the leaderboard with a 138 total and a one-stroke margin in the individual battle.
Brandon Carlson (So., Gilbert, AZ/Perry (AZ) H.S.) matched his first round 71 and sat in third place at 142.
Bryce Melville (Fr., Morinville, AZ/Sturgeon H.S.) was tied for sixth at 72-71--143.
Play continues in the third round Saturday.
