The men's basketball team lost their first game of the season Tuesday night as they dropped their conference opener against South Mountain, 65-53.

The T-Birds just couldn't seem to get on track shooting the ball as they shot 34.5% from the field and just 29.4% from behind the arc. Mesa had trailed by as much as 14 at one point in the first half but were able to whittle down the deficit before half as they went into the locker down 32-26.

In the second half Mesa made runs to cut into the South Mountain lead but were not able to take control on the scoreboard as they fell for the first time in the year.

The T-Birds were led in scoring by Tampa Scott who had 17, followed by Timmy Johnson with 16. Mesa was able to control the glass as they won the battle of the boards 35-27, Lual Lual and Nicholas Riley each had 11 rebounds in the contest.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Jimmy Causey Jr. and Darien Allen who each had 14, followed by Jaylen Wesley with 13. South Mountain shot 45.1% from the field and 18.2% from three point range.

With the loss Mesa's record falls to 4-1 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play. The T-Birds will be back in action Nov. 30 as they will host Central Arizona College.
