Mesa Baseball looks to keep season alive in against Gateway on Friday

Friday May 3, 2024 - 10:50 a.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

No. 1 Mesa Baseball fell to No. 4 Gateway, 3-0 in game one of the NJCAA Region I DII Semifinals.

The T-Bird bats were cold for a majority of the game as Mesa was not able to get consistent baserunners on until the final inning.

Eric Nachtsheim took the bump for the T-Birds and had a serviceable outing pitching six innings, striking out six, and giving up two runs. Unfortunately for Mesa, Gateways's Logan Martin pitched lights out in eight and two-thirds innings striking out eight and keeping the T-Birds scoreless.

In the ninth inning it seemed Mesa had gotten to Martin as they were able to load the bases with two outs, but a Gateway pitching change helped the Geckos get out of the jam as pinch hitter Easton Turner popped out to center to end the ball game.

It's win or go home for the T-Birds on Friday as a loss will end their season and a victory would force a decisive game three to determine who moves onto the Region I Finals.

Game two of the series will start at 3:00 p.m. An admission fee is required to enter the game, see pricing below.
