Volleyball take two out of three matches on day one of Scottsdale Tournament

Scottsdale, AZ- Matthew Werle and the Mesa volleyball program have officially turned a new leaf today with not just one but two match wins in the Scottsdale Classic at Scottsdale Community College.  The T-Birds defeated Victoria College (Canada) in five sets, 13-25, 25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 15-9 and Spokane Falls Community College in five sets, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12.

The first victory came in the early morning match against Victoria College.  Mesa was led by Chalene Smith(Fr., Mesa, AZ, Mesa H.S.) who led the team in kills with 14 while Megan Derr(Fr., Glendale, AZ, Raymond S. Kellis H.S.) had 31 digs.

In the second match against Spokane Falls, it was Breanna Scott(Fr., Casa Grande, AZ, Chandler H.S.) who finished with a team high 12 kills and 25 digs, as Derr again was the dig leader with 26.  Christina Pociask(So., Mesa, AZ, Perry H.S.) stepped in as setter and had 43 assists.  Mesa won the first two sets against Spokane but they dropped the next two sets setting the table for an exciting fifth and final set.  The T-Birds were down 10-6 in the final set but rallied back for the 15-12 set and match victory.

Mesa dropped its final match of the afternoon to Central Wyoming College three sets to one, 23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25.  Taylor Whiteside(So., Moreno Valley, CA, Moreno Valley H.S.) led Mesa with 10 kills.

For this Mesa club though, who have been through the fire a couple times the past few seasons, have found a rhythym with each that is also yielding confidence in one another. There is a sense of "we can win" attitude rather than the "I hope something good happens" attitude.

For a team who before today had only been victorious once in their last 30 matches, winning two matches in three games isn't a step in the right direction, it's a kangaroo sized leap in the right direction.

Mesa will play tomorrow against Pima at the Scottsdale Classic at 10 a.m.
