Women's Tennis falls to Utah Tech in season opener

MCC Women's Tennis kicked off their season on Sunday with a doubleheader against a very good Utah Tech team on Sunday.

The Lady T-Birds fell to the Trailblazers in both matches, losing 9-0 consecutively. 

MCC's Mikaela Correa and Jackelin Almada Lopez gave Mariana Zurita and Rachel Mellor all they could handle in their doubles contest in the No. 1 match, falling 8-6 in a back and forth thrilling bout. The T-Birds No. 2 and No. 3 doubles both fell 8-0 in their opening contests.

Though on the scoresheet MCC did not achieve their goal in doubles, head coach Feroz Rast is proud of how his team handled their NCAA opponent.

"We fought for every point today. Utah Tech is a really strong team and they showed it today. I am proud of the fight we showed and also liked how we played today in doubles," said Rast, "Mika and Jackie had the lead and almost pulled off the major win at #1 doubles today. All 3 doubles were playing confident and under control."

In singles competition Correa and Lopez would show some fight in their matches as Lopez would lose 6-1, 6-1 while Correa fell 6-2, 6-1. The T-Birds No. 3, 4, 5, 6 would each fall 6-0, 6-0 in their matches.

The second match of the doublehead was similar to the first as MCC was swept in both doubles and singles competition. 

Playing competition as strong as Mesa did will only strengthen their team and gear them up for their conference schedule which kicks off on Feb 27 against Paradise Valley. 

"Unfortunately the opponent was just too strong for us today. I know that this match showed us where we need to go by the end of the season. I know this team will come back and work on getting better and we will be ready for region play in 10 days," said Rast.
