Mesa finishes fifth, Vakasioula second, at NJCAA women's golf

Sanford, Fla. – Mesa had its best team finish since 2015 and All-American Alyzzah Vakasioula took second place individually, as the NJCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship concluded Thursday.

The T-Birds produced their best round of the tournament, a 317, to climb into fifth place with a 72-hole score of 326-322-332-317—1297, edging Eastern Florida State which had a 1299 total. MCC has finished in the top ten in 17 of the last 20 years the event has been held.

Vakasioula improved on her fifth place finish a year ago with a 75-74-71-72—292, four shots behind the winner Minori Nagano, of champion Seminole State. She finished nine shots clear of third place.  Her second place finish was the third in MCC history. Erin Groeneveld and Olivia Campos tied for second in 2003.

Mesa got strong finishes from each of its other three scorers. Jolie Guyette closed tied for 28th place at 82-89-84-77—332. Vivianna Holguin was tied for 33rd with a 84-78-88-84—334 and Abby Schmidt closed at a tie 41st place with an 85-81-89-84—339.

The tournament was played over the difficult Mayfair C.C. which yielded only three sub-par rounds in the entire tournament.
