MCC Basketball travels to Cochise College to wrap up their regular season

Monday March 4, 2024 - 12:25 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

MCC Basketball makes the long trip down to Douglas, AZ on Monday for their regular season finale as they take on Cochise College.

Women's Basketball:

No. 6 Mesa has a lot to play for in their final game of the regular season. Entering play with a 23-5 record (18-4 ACCAC) they can secure the No. 1 seed in the DII Region I postseason with a win. MCC and Pima have the same conference record before play begins on Monday but Mesa owns the tiebreaker over the Aztecs as they won two of their three matchups this year.

Cochise College also has a lot to play for when it comes to seeding as they currently sit in the No. 2 seed for DI teams but have Arizona Western hot on their heels just one game behind. AWC also owns the tiebreaker over Cochise College so an AWC win and a Cochise loss would mean the Apaches would fall into the No. 3 position and lose home court advantage.

This is the second meeting between MCC and Cochise as the two met way back in the first regular season game for Mesa on Nov. 3. The Lady T-Birds were able to pull off a 64-54 victory as Ashiian Hunter led the way for Mesa with 19 points followed by Mackenzie Shivers who had 17. It is important to note that Mesa's leading scorer and their assist leader Jaida Brooks did not play in their first meeting.

Scenarios:

  • Mesa wins over Cochise: MCC secures the No. 1 and home court advantage throughout the postseason. Mesa would host Chandler-Gilbert in the semi-finals on Thursday.

  • Mesa loses and Pima beats Eastern Arizona: Pima would jump Mesa for the No. 1 seed taking home court advantage from them throughout the postseason. Mesa would host Scottsdale in the semi-finals on Thursday.

  • Mesa and Pima lose on Monday: Standings would remain the same, MCC would host Chandler-Gilbert while Pima would host Scottsdale in the semi-finals. MCC would maintain home court advantage.

Men's Basketball:

MCC Men's Basketball does not have much to play for on Monday as their 7-20 (5-16 ACCAC) record will not be enough to make the DII Region I postseason. MCC has lost their last five games after they fell to Phoenix College on Saturday 90-68. Mesa can play the role of spoiler against Cochise as a victory on Monday and an AWC victory over Glendale would push the Apaches to the No. 3 seed in the postseason forcing them to play on the road throughout. The women's game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be watched live by clicking here.
