No. 6 MCC Women's Basketball came out on top again on Wednesday as they took down Chandler-Gilbert, 81-40.

The Lady T-Birds have now won eight straight as they improved their record to 16-4 (11-3 ACCAC) wth the win.

Mesa had a fast start to the contest in comparison to the first time they clashed with the Coyotes. MCC put up 23 points in the first quarter on 10-21 shooting from the floor (47.6%). In their last meeting, MCC only had 22 points at halftime. 

In the opening quarter the T-Birds held CGCC to their lowest point total in the game, giving up just six points as the Coyotes were 3-13 from the field (23.1%).

In the second period MCC kept it rolling offensively as well as defensively, outscoting CGCC, 18-8 while shooting 46.7% and holding the Coyotes to 21.4% from the floor.

The third period was the only frame that CGCC scored double digits in the game, as they had 19 points while shooting 37.5% from the floor. A big turning point for CGCC in the quarter was their three-point shooting as Jordan Zackery hit two, while Jaylyn Nashio and Shirly Yazzie hit one each. Up until that point Chandler-Gilbert had not connected from deep. Though the Lady T-Birds allowed 19 points in the quarter they still were able to put up 19 points of their own in the 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter was very similar to the first and second, MCC held CGCC to just 7 points while only allowing one made field goal as the Coyotes went 1-15 from the floor (6.7%).

Offensively Mesa had the best quarter as they shot 9-17 from the floor (52.9%). Kayda Pierce had an exceptional quarter as she shot 4-5 from the floor, hit two three-pointers while scoring 11 points in the period.

No. 6 Mesa will be back in action on Saturday as they host DI opponent, Central Arizona College for their only matchup this season. 

Breakout Thunderbirds:

  • After setting a career high in points against South Mountain last week, Aaliyah Garcia set a new personal best as she had 15 points against the Coyotes. Garcia also recorded five assists, five rebounds, to go along with four steals.

  • Sophomore Jana Solee also had a career night as she had 14 points off the bench to go along with six rebounds.

  •  Kayda Pierce set a career high in points as she totaled 11 for Mesa, all of which came in the fourth quarter.
