Mesa, AZ - The Thunderbirds women's basketball team just completed one of the biggest comebacks in program history, as they defeated the Cochise Apaches Wednesday night after being down as much as 16 points.

The lady T-Birds got off to a rough start, as they trailed 11-0 before finally scoring at the 4:58 mark in the first quarter. Mesa was down by double digits at the conclusion of the first, second, and third quarters. It took a miraculous fourth-quarter run for the MCC to stay in contention, as they were down by 15 at the beginning of the quarter, down by 10 with 2:53 remaining, and down by six with 58 seconds remaining.

Mackenzie Shivers made a big-time layup and got the and-one to make it a 63-65 game with 39 seconds left. After Nia Boston missed a jump shot with six seconds left, Cochise's Andjela Bigovic grabbed the rebound but had a costly turnover as she was charged with a travel violation that gave Mesa one last chance to either tie the game up or win it outright.

In the final seconds, AnnMarie Batista missed a jump shot but Mykah Anderson was able to grab the offensive rebound and get in a last-second layup with 0.7 remaining to tie the game up at 65 apiece and send it to overtime.

In OT, it remained a tight back-and-forth battle between the two squads. With seven seconds left and the game tied at 75, Boston was fouled and sent to the free-throw line, where she went 1-2 to give Mesa a one-point lead. After preventing Cochise from getting a game-winning shot in, Mesa was fouled again and made both free throws to give them a three-point lead with just four seconds left. The Apaches attempted a quick fast break but weren't able to get in their game-tying three.

It was truly a spectacular and heart-pounding sequence of events that led Mesa (14-3 overall, 9-1 ACCAC) to the win and remain second overall in the ACCAC standings.

Four players scored in double figures for MCC as they were led by Shivers with 18 points. Anderson ended up with 16 points, five assists, and three steals. Boston also had an excellent performance with 16 points and five steals. Love Troupe nearly recorded a double-double (12 points, nine rebounds).

Mesa will host Scottsdale this Saturday at 4:00 PM.
