Mesa, Ariz. - The Thunderbirds women's basketball team cruised by the South Mountian Cougars Tuesday night, 82-56, in their first conference game of the season.
SMCC kept it close with Mesa in the first quarter, but the lady T-Birds pulled away in the second quarter as they outscored the Cougars, 22-11, to take a 40-22 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Mesa went into cruise control to maintain their lead and eventually win by 26 points.
Four lady T-Birds scored in double figures, led by Nia Boston and Mackenzie Shivers with 15 points apiece.
As a team, Mesa shot impressively from the field. Shooting 50% overall and 44.8% from the three-point line.
While they did give up 21 turnovers, MCC did force SMCC to have 28 turnovers and held a 28-15 advantage in points off turnovers.
Up next for the lady T-Birds (4-1 overall, 1-0 ACCAC), they host a pair of home games next week. Wednesday, November 30th vs. Central Arizona, and Saturday, December 3rd vs. Chandler-Gilbert.
