Jayla Johnson Earns Her Second ACCAC DII Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Honors

MESA, AZ - For the third consecutive week, a player from the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team has been named the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Sophomore guard Jayla Johnson has won this award for the second time this season. She was also won this award on January 10.

This past week Johnson and the Thunderbirds went on the road to Douglas, to square off against Cochise College. The T-Birds won their third straight game, by a final of 67-57. In the win, Johnson hit 6-of-8 shots, including 4-of-5 on three-pointers, while scoring 17 points in MCC's win. Johnson also added four rebounds, two steals, and an assist in the win.

As a team, the T-Birds improve to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in ACCAC play. Mesa currently sits atop the ACCAC DII Women's Standings and the T-Birds continue to receive votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll; which was also released on Monday afternoon.

The Thunderbirds return home this Wednesday for a conference doubleheader against South Mountain Community College. The women will get things started at 5:30 pm, followed by the men at 7:30 pm. Both games will be live-streamed at: https://mesatbirdsports.com/live.
