Lady T-Birds Squander 15 Point Second Half Lead, Fall to Chandler-Gilbert, 72-62

Mesa, AZ - For the first time since 2008, the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball lost to the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes, 72-62, at Theo Heap Gym Wednesday night.

In a bizarre third quarter, the Thunderbirds held two leads of 15 points while maintaining positive momentum.  Within a blink of an eye, the Coyotes used a three-quarter court defense and with Mesa going ice cold from the field, Chandler-Gilbert not only rallied but overtook the lead by the end of the quarter, 48-47.

For a moment in the fourth quarter, Mesa retook a one point lead but from the 8:34 mark of the quarter, Chandler-Gilbert took one final lead of the night.

Mesa shot well from the field overall at 40 percent (24-59) but poorly from three, 4-19 (21%), and shot 10-16 from the free-line, compared to 16-17 from the free-throw line for Chandler-Gilbert.

The T-Birds fall to 7-11 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.  Mesa will be on the road the next two games, first at South Mountain on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm then at Tohono O'odham next Wednesday night at 5:30 pm.  Mesa will return home next Saturday, the 26th with a 2 pm start time against the Central Arizona Vaqueros.
