Slow week still adds NJCAA track and field qualifying improvement

Tempe, AZ – It was a light week for the Mesa track and field teams as the season winds down toward regional and national competition.

A handful of MCC athletes competed in Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic with a few new or improved NJCAA qualifying marks set.

Tristan Stellmach continues his quest for national recognition with two improved qualification standards. He lowered his time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by nearly 13 seconds to 9:34,80 and now ranks fourth in the nation in that event.

He also knocked a few hundredths of a second off his prior mark in the 1,500, lowering his standard to 3:59.23 to rank him 14th nationally.

Andrew McCumber added his name to the list in that event just slightly behinds Stellmach. McCumber ran a 3:59.56 and is 16th in the country.

The T-Birds will compete at home this week, hosting the Mesa Invitational on Friday.
