Arizona Western tops softball twice

YUMA, AZ - With a busy week ahead, Mesa head softball coach Grady Moorhead attempted to conserve some of his pitching for Division II games looming, with results that were somewhat encouraging.

Resting his top two starting pitchers, MCC still was completive against the tenth-ranked Division I Matadors, despite losing both games.

After dropping the first game 9-0, the T-Birds battled on even terms in game two with Mesa pitching limiting AWC,, which has a .334 team batting average, to just three hits in a 5-4 loss.

The T-Birds jumped on top quickly in the first inning. Alyssa Gallegos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Cibola H.S.), playing in front of home fans, smacked a two run homer. Meggan Horn (So, Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) had singled just previously.

After Western grabbed a 3-2 lead, Brittany Ramos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Kofa H.S.) also excited her local fans with a solo shot in the fourth.

But AWC answered with two solo homers of their own to grab a 5-3 lead.

Mesa added one more in the sixth but was unable to complete the comeback.
