Coolidge, Ariz. - The Thunderbirds men's cross country team was able to hold off the Pima Aztecs by four points to win the Vaquero CAMPY Invitational Saturday morning.

Yotuel Garcia won the race with a personal-best time of 25:24 for 8,000 meters. Connor King (7th - 27:27) and Greyson Akers (8th - 27:46) each finished within the top 10 as well. Joshua Lumpkin (13th - 27:57) and Hayden Gelder (15th - 28:17) rounded out the five scorers for the T-Birds.

The T-Birds scored a total of 40 points. Pima was not far behind, as they scored 44 points. Central Arizona was third with 57 points. The College of Southern Nevada was fourth with 94 points. Phoenix College was fifth with 151 points. Coconino was sixth with 157 points.

"I am extremely proud of the entire team," said Assistant Coach Spencer Peterson. "The T-Birds had a challenging week and responded positively! Our men were without two athletes today as well. Our goal is to have no more than a two-minute spread between our number one and five runners, and we have a ways to go to reach that goal, but today the men were 3:07. Yotuel was outstanding in capturing the gold and running a personal best, but actually his time was closer to 25:00 because the lead bike took the top three runners the wrong way on the course!"

The T-Birds will compete in the Puma Invitational next Friday. Paradise Valley CC will host the meet at Sereno Park in Scottsdale.
