Men's Tennis captures Region Runner-Up title

Friday April 12, 2024 - 9:30 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

The Mesa Community College Men's Tennis team claimed the 2024 Region I Runner-Up title on Thursday after their 9-0 victory over Paradise Valley.

The T-Birds finished their conference season 4-2 after sweeping Glendale in their three matches and going 1-2 against Paradise Valley who took home the Region I title.

The second place finish snaps the Thunderbirds streak of nine straight Region I titles which began all the way back in 2014 (no season finishes in 2020 due to the pandemic).

The Pumas were a thorn in Mesa's side this season as they came up with big match wins in both of their 6-3 victories over the T-Birds.

Head coach Rast is encouraged by Mesa's victory to end conference play as their big goal of competing and making noise at nationals is still obtainable.

"To finish the season with a big 9-0 against a very strong PVCC team shows that we are trending the right way and we are playing our best tennis when it counts the most! I can't wait to see how we perform at nationals," said Rast.

Mesa still has one more match in the regular season on April 20 as they host Arizona Christian University before they will turn their attention to the NJCAA National Tournament on May 13-17 in Plano, TX.
