Career night from Gonzales not enough as Men's Basketball falls to Chandler-Gilbert

Sunday January 7, 2024 - 3:25  p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

MCC Men's Basketball dropped their fifth straight game on Saturday as they fell to Chandler-Gilbert, 77-72.

It was a seemingly consistent game for Mesa as they shot 43.3% (13-30)  from the field in both halves. MCC shot the lights out from behind the arc in the game going 13-26 setting a new season high.

The T-Birds and Coyotes battled back and forth in the first half and ended the period 36-34 with MCC holding the advantage.

Mesa would push their lead up to six early but CGCC would battle back to take a 61-63 lead with 6:36 left in the contest. MCC would answer with a 10-0 run to take an eight point lead with just under four minutes left.

CGCC would come back to tie the game at 72 each with just over two minutes left. Both teams would remain scoreless until the Coyotes would hit a three-pointer with 28.1 left.

MCC would call a timeout and had a chance to tie the game but an Anthony Garcia three-pointer couldn't find the mark as the Coyotes would secure the rebound and the win.

With the loss Mesa's overall record falls to 4-9 on the year (2-5 ACCAC). The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Wednesday as they host South Mountain in a conference contest.

Breakout Thunderbirds:

  • Orlando Gonzales had himself a breakout game hitting a career high eight three-pointers (four in each half) while tallying another career high as he had 29 points.

  • Though Pearse Long had off shooting night and found himself in foul trouble throughout the game he still was able to produce five rebounds and dish out five assists tying a career high.
