Mesa basketball welcomes Scottsdale Community College to Theo Heap Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The men's game will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. while the women's game will tip-off at 4:00 p.m.

Men's Basketball

The Mesa men's basketball come into their game Saturday with 6-11 overall record (2-8 ACCAC) with a four game losing streak. In their last game they held their own in the first half against Cochise, taking 37-35 lead into the halftime locker room. In the second half the Apaches powered through the Thunderbirds on their way to victory, 86-68.

The Thunderbirds are led in scoring as they have been the entire season by Timmy Johnson  (14.7). MCC ranks in the back half in the conference in most statistical categories including points per game (75.9 and 10th in conference) and field goal percentage (44.5% and 12th in conference).

The Scottsdale men's team roll into the game as the No. 20 team in the country with a 14-4 conference record (6-4 ACCAC) while enjoying an eight game winning streak. The Artichokes are top five in many statistical categories including points per game in which they're second in the conference, and three-pointers made per game where they rank 5th in the conference with 8.8 makes a contest. 

SCC has six players averaging double digits in scoring all led by Isaiah Broady who scores 14.8 points a game. Tyree Tyler not only leads his team in rebounds per game but their entire conference as he grabs 10.9 boards a game.

Last season the teams split their games against one another as each team won on their home floor.

Women's Basketball

The No. 5 MCC women's team is coming off possibly the biggest win of the year, and the biggest comeback in program history against Cochise Wednesday. Trailing 15 points going into the final quarter, the Thunderbirds stormed back, outscoring the Apaches 28-13 in the final period to force overtime. In the extra five minutes, the T-Birds would outscore Cochise 13-10 to take the 78-75 victory. With that win MCC improved their record to 14-3 overall (9-1 ACCAC).

Mesa is led in scoring by Nia Boston who averages 12.9 points a game. Boston was also named ACCAC DII women's basketball player of the week for her performances last week against Yavapai and Phoenix College.

Scottsdale comes in riding an eight game winning streak while boasting a 11-5 overall record (6-4 ACCAC). The Artichokes are led in scoring by Monique Shim who averages 14.7 points per game. Shim also earned NJCAA Player of the Week back on Jan. 4 when in a three game stretch she averaged 26.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and two assists.

Mesa has won the last 11 matchups between the two teams, their last loss to Scottsdale came in 2015.
