MCC Holiday Tournament Day One Recap

Mesa, Ariz. - The 2022 Mesa Community College Holiday Tournament Presented by VisitMesa showcased four entertaining games from eight talented teams yesterday.

In the opening matchup of the tournament No. 14 South Plains College defeated No. 19 Snow College, 60-80. The Texans were led in scoring by Christian Coleman who posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Dylan Jones led the Badgers in scoring as he shot 5-13 off the bench, tallying 14 points in the loss. 

In the second game, No. 1 ranked Salt Lake Community College defeated Justice College, 119-67. Justice stepped in for Central Arizona last minute and had a tall task taking on the No. 1 team in the nation. The Bruins had seven players in double figures scoring as they were led by Alejandro Vasquez who had 25 points. Jaquan Scott earned a double-double as he had 19 points and 11 rebounds. For Justice College Roman Gandaria and Jeremiah Appleton each had 11 points in the loss.

The third game of the day saw San Bernardino Valley College take down Glendale Community College, 83-61. Dominique Daniels scored the most points on the day for any player as he had 27 points, 21 of which came in the first half. For Glendale, both Cameron Coraggio and Tramane Lee both had 13 for the Gauchos who went into the halftime locker room only down eight but were not able to overcome the deficit. 

In the final game of the day, the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds were defeated by the Seward County Community College Saints, 65-59. The Saints took an 11-point lead into halftime and were able to weather a Thunderbird second-half comeback as the T-Birds were able to cut the lead to four with less than five minutes remaining. Timmy Johnson led all scorers as he scored 19 points for Mesa. Jaylin Henderson and Mario Whitley both scored 13 for the Saints in the victory. 

Day two of action will see No. 19 Snow College take on Justice College at 2:00 p.m. followed by Glendale taking on Mesa at 4:00 p.m. Both games will be in the consolation bracket. For the final two games of the day, No. 14 South Plains takes on No. 1 Salt Lake at 6:00 p.m., while San Bernardino Valley battles Seward County at 8:00 p.m.
