Late Rally Leads Arizona Western past T-Birds

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Community College men's basketball team fell on Saturday afternoon to Arizona Western College, by a final of 82-70 inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.

With the loss, Mesa remains winless at 0-5 overall and 0-4 in ACCAC play. With the victory, the Matadors improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The first half between the Matadors and Thunderbirds was a back-and-forth battle on Saturday afternoon. The two squads seemed to exchange bucket for bucket in the early going. At the half, AWC held a slim 35-31 lead over the T-Birds.

In the second half, the Matadors got off to a quick start and would not look back. Mesa was able to keep pace, but never could quite catch up to AWC. Arizona Western outscored the T-Birds 47-39 in the final 20 minutes.

In the losing effort, a pair of Thunderbirds scored in double-figures, led by BJ Burries. He finished his evening with 22 points, on 8-15 shooting from the field, to go along with 3 rebounds. Tampa Scott IV chimed in with 15 points on the evening as well for MCC.

The Mesa T-Birds return to action this Wednesday in Coolidge, Arizona to face the Central Arizona College Vaqueros. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
