Mesa Memories: MCC women's golf streak

Many sports organizations have put together impressive runs of victories stretching over the course of individual events and sometimes even years. These are often referred to as "The Streak."

Few, however, can match the Mesa women's golf program's version of "The Streak."

Between 2007 and 2018 MCC won 83 consecutive ACCAC tournaments, a remarkable feat especially considering that in junior college athletics the entire roster normally changes every two years, unlike every four years at four-year institutions. Thus, stability in the roster is a challenge to overcome.

But John Guerrero, head coach during the entire run, churned out championship teams year after year.

During that stretch the T-Birds qualified for the NJCAA Division I national championship every year, finishing among the top ten each season but one. Mesa even hosted the even three times.

There were two top five finishes. In 2015 Mesa captured its highest ranking, placing third just a year after a fourth-place finish. Both of those teams were led by two-time All-America Charatta Thongbai who placed eighth nationally as a freshman and then tied for seventh the following year.

But Thongbai was hardly the only great player during that stretch. MCC athletes earned All-America recognition seven times during the streak beginning with Lindi Dovarrubias in 2007. Jamie Jaruvangsanti earned the honor in 2011. Three players received All-America distinction during the T-Birds's third place finish in 2015: Thonbai, Sierra Meyerscough and Jill Harvison. Most recently, Haley Kapanicas earned the honor in 2017.

Actually, Kapanicas was not Mesa's last All-American. Madison Voisard was tapped in 2019, after the streak ended.

Other MCC teams have also put together outstanding runs of victories and championships but none, indeed few in the country, can match the women's golf march to 83 consecutive wins.
