Jim Frye, outstanding Mesa baseball coach

The task for a new coach coming into a program to replace the founder of the sport who had just won the last two national championships can be quite daunting. Probably the best way to make your presence felt is to win another national title.

That is exactly what Jim Frye did in 1972.

At the time, Jim Brock, the founder of MCC baseball, had just departed for Arizona State. Frye stepped in and guided his team to a 41-13 record and a third consecutive national title.

Overall, Frey produced a 334-172 record in 11 seasons. He was the second of just four coaches who have led the MCC baseball program in its 55-year history.

Frye's teams made three more NJCAA World Series appearances. They made it back to nationals once again in 1973 after winning another ACCAC title, as well as in 1980 and 1982, his final season.

Frye was inducted into NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997 and then to the MCC Hall of Fame in 2007 just the second year of its existence.
