Mesa Track & Field athlete Deshay Turner looks forward to outdoor season after shattering indoor records

MCC Track & Field athlete Deshay Turner had a historic 2024 Indoor season for the T-Birds.

Turner broke four school records (three individual and one relay) enroute to earning All-American honors in the 4x4 relay at the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

Turner broke the 60m, 200m, 400m, and was a member of the 4x400m relay team that broke the school record. For Turner, having such success in her freshman season of indoor all came down to the prep work put in by her and the MCC coaching staff that helped prepare her for what was to come.

"The training, it was way different than how we would train for outdoor because it's shorter races and you're dealing with elevation but it was definitely the training," said Turner when asked what was key to her successful indoor season.

Coming into the season Turner wasnt on a mission to break multiple records, just to contribute to the team success and improve on her marks. When she began to shatter school records her confidence grew and she knew she could do more.

"I was surprised at first, I didn't think I would break any records so I was really surprised, but after breaking two I knew I could do this at MCC," said Turner.

Even though Turner had tremendous success and itched her name in the MCC record books during her indoor season, her sights arent set on shattering records in her outdoor season. Turner is more focused on cutting her times in her events and contributing to team success.

"I haven't really looked at the records so I won't know until they tell me I broke it. I want to run an 11.6 in my hundred cause I'm still at 12.  I also want to hit 23's in my 200m, and I want to get my 400m down even more."

It wouldn't take long for Turner to already shatter outdoor school records as in the first weekend of the season she broke the 200m record that had previously stood for 41 years.

Turner has already qualified for the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay.
