Mesa Track & Field opened outdoor season over the weekend

The Mesa Track & Field team had a busy weekend as they opened up their 2024 outdoor season.

On Thurs./Fri. MCC participated in the Mesa Multis while on Thursday night the Thunderbirds competed in the Distance in the Dark. On Saturday Mesa went to work at the Spring Break Fiesta and the Cody McBride Invitational.

Along with the long list of T-Birds who have already qualified for nationals (see below), many athletes hit new personal records over the weekend.

Chrishawn Shropshire hit a new PR in the 200m (23.28), and the 400m (52.24). Ernest and Samuel Green each earned a new best in the 1500m event as Ernest finished in 3:55.30 while Samuel clocked a time of 3:57.26. Both earned a nod to nationals.

Steven Saurini finished the 5000m event in 17:09.83 which gave him a new PR while Wyatt Williams hit a PR in the 10000m clocking a time of 33:42.07. 

Sarah Nipper qualified for nationals and hit a PR in pole vault as she was successful at 3.42m. Austin John eclipsed a PR in the shot put event as he earned a mark of 12.75m.

Darius Brown hit a PR in the 100 and 200m events as he finished the 100m in 10.65 and the 200m in 21.25. Jhaylin Palmer also set a PR in the same events finishing the 100m in 10.73 and the 200m in 21.65.

James Hockings and Jeremiah Reed each set a PR in the 100m as Hockings clocked a time of 10.82 while Reed finished in 11.03. 

Deshay Turner hit PR marks in the 100 and 200m events as she finished the 100m in 11.92 and the 200m in 24.12.

Odelia Lemos set three new PRs in the 100m (12.30), the 100m hurdles (15.19), and the 400m hurdles (1:09.64).

Kendra Guest hit a PR in the 800m finishing with a time of 2:24.55. Anna Harmon set a PR in the 1500m (4:46.89) and the 10000m (39:.24.98).

The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Fri./Sat. As they head to Tucson, AZ to compete in the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona.
